CBC Radio One St. John’s 640 AM (CBN) public broadcaster owned and operated by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The station first aired on November 14, 1932 in pre-confederation era. Dominion Broadcasting Co. launched the station by the brand name of VONF. VOGY and VONF were amalgamated into a single broadcasting entity VONF in September 1934. A flagship station VONF St. John’s was initiated by Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland on March 13, 1939 using an ERP of 10,000 watts and frequency of 640 MHz. In 1949 the channel was renamed as CBN after NL joined the confederation ad Canada’s 10th province. In 1962 Dominion and Trans-Canada were integrated into a single CBC service station. St. Anthony repeater was launched in 1968 at 600 kHz with an ERP of 10,000 watts.

Permissions for a further transmitter at Marystown were given by CRTC on October 18 of the same year. CBC Radio Network on September 1, 1997 was renamed ad CBC Radio One 640 AM. To the day CBN has its transmitters in Clarenville, Trepassey, St. Albans, Marystown, Placentia, Swift Current, Fermeuse and Ramea. CBN was last renewed by CRTC on May 28, 2013 with all its transmitters until August 31, 2018.
